Director
Sungkyu Jung
Sungkyu Jung was appointed as the Director of IDIS on March 4, 2024. He is a Professor of Statistics at Seoul National University and a core member of the SNU Center for LAMP project. His research focuses on the theoretical study and applications of modern statistics and data science in analyzing data on non-standard spaces, including high-dimension, low-sample-size (HDLSS) situations, non-Euclidean data, and the intersection of geometry and statistics. Additionally, he develops models and methodologies for dimension reduction, visualization, hypothesis testing, and addresses statistical issues in data privacy, including differential privacy and synthetic data generation.
Associate Director
[Focused Research Group]
Jihoon Kim
Ji-hoon Kim is an Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Seoul National University studying computational cosmology and astrophysics, and was appointed as the Focused Research Group Leader of IDIS in March 2024. His research focuses on understanding the galaxy and massive black hole formation process using high-resolution simulation codes and machine learning. He has also been coordinating a large inter-institutional cosmological simulations comparison project called AGORA. He was formerly a research associate and a NASA Einstein Fellow at Stanford/SLAC, a Moore postdoc fellow in the Caltech/TAPIR, and an IMPS postdoc fellow at UC Santa Cruz. Before that, he received his Ph.D. from the Department of Physics at Stanford University.
